Fiorella De La O, expressing Art and Nature
The Seven Sisters: Return of the Matriarchy campaign is a conversation about an obligation, and about an urgent and necessary need for change in our relationship with nature and, through her, with ourselves and each other. Working with partners in the tribal, environmental justice, and faith communities, the Seven Sisters raise up the voices and elevate the timeless vision of Indigenous women. These gifted and prominent Indigenous women come from across the Pacific Northwest, from Southeast Alaska and from the Amazon savanna. They are versed and voiced with an understanding of what is at stake, and why, and what must now be done in the name of all our relations.
The opening Welcome Song was followed by an evening dedicated to a feminine nurturing vision and wisdom in sharp contrast to the death wish of a dominating and denaturing hyper-masculinity. On the stage was displayed the Seven Sisters tapestry created by one of the Seven Sisters, that was draped over the empty chair dedicated to the ancestors. At the end of the evening their words were witnessed by two prominent non-Indigenous women who spoke their heartfelt truth about the words, the wisdom, and the work ahead for caretaking Mother Earth.
